MOUNJARO IN SINGAPORE

How prescribing works there, what it costs, and the alternatives.

Singapore has some of the strictest pharmaceutical regulation in Asia and some of the highest treatment costs. This explains how GLP-1 prescribing works there, what drives the price, and what options exist.

In short

In Singapore, weight loss injections are prescription-only and regulated by the Health Sciences Authority. Availability and approval status change, so confirm the current position with a Singapore-registered doctor before making plans.

How weight loss injections are regulated in Singapore

Medicines in Singapore are regulated by the Health Sciences Authority, and prescription medicines can only be supplied through a registered doctor. That applies to every GLP-1 and dual-agonist product without exception.

Which specific products are registered, and for which indication, changes over time as approvals are granted or updated. A product licensed for type 2 diabetes is not automatically licensed for weight management, and the distinction matters for how it can be prescribed and reimbursed.

Because this position shifts, the accurate answer to 'is Mounjaro available in Singapore' is one you should get from a Singapore-registered doctor or from HSA directly rather than from any article, including this one.

What does not change is the underlying requirement: assessment, prescription, and supervision by a qualified doctor.

Why Singapore costs are high

Singapore has high clinical overheads, strict import and distribution requirements, and a private healthcare market where consultation fees are substantial. All of that feeds into the final price patients pay.

GLP-1 medicines are priced by strength everywhere, so the monthly figure rises as your dose escalates. In a high-cost market that escalation is felt more sharply.

Weight management is generally not covered by MediSave or MediShield for the medicine itself, though the position can differ where type 2 diabetes is the primary diagnosis. Check your specific policy rather than assuming.

Over a treatment course that may run twelve months or longer, the cumulative difference between markets becomes considerable.

What proper supervision should include, wherever you are

The standard does not change by country. Assessment covering weight history, full medication list, family history and screening for weight-related conditions. Baseline blood work including thyroid, glucose, liver, kidney and vitamins.

Gradual dose escalation at scheduled reviews rather than automatic increases. Dietitian input on protein and muscle preservation. Written guidance on which symptoms need same-day contact. A plan for stopping.

If you are being offered a prescription without blood work or a proper consultation, that is a warning sign in Singapore exactly as it is anywhere else.

Cost pressure sometimes pushes patients towards unregulated sources. Compounded and unbranded products are not quality-assured, dosing cannot be verified, and we do not endorse them under any circumstances.

Who qualifies for treatment

The clinical framework is broadly consistent internationally: a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above where a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, PCOS or fatty liver is present.

For patients of Asian ethnicity, several guidelines apply lower thresholds, because metabolic complications develop at lower BMI than in European populations. This is directly relevant to most patients in Singapore.

Treatment is not prescribed with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 syndrome, a history of pancreatitis, in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with planned conception in the near term.

Waist measurement and metabolic markers are assessed alongside BMI rather than BMI being used alone.

Why some Singapore patients look abroad

Medical travel from Singapore to India, Thailand and Malaysia is well established, and weight management is an increasingly common reason. The primary driver is cost, though availability sometimes plays a part.

For injectable treatment specifically, the practical difficulty is that this is not a single procedure. It is a course of months requiring dose adjustments, reviews and blood work, which does not suit a one-off trip.

Where medical travel genuinely makes sense is for procedures with a defined episode of care — bariatric surgery or the swallowable gastric balloon — rather than for ongoing prescriptions.

That distinction is worth being clear about before booking anything.

Bariatric surgery as a medical travel option

Bariatric surgery produces the largest and most durable weight reduction of any available treatment, and frequently improves type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and blood pressure alongside.

As a defined episode of care with a recovery period, it fits medical travel far better than a twelve-month injectable course. Patients typically travel once, stay for the assessment, procedure and initial recovery, then return home.

The critical requirement is follow-up. Bariatric surgery requires lifelong vitamin monitoring and structured review, so before travelling you need a clear plan for who provides that in Singapore.

Any surgeon willing to operate without discussing your follow-up arrangements is not managing your care properly.

The Allurion gastric balloon

The Allurion balloon is swallowed as a capsule, filled with sterile fluid, and occupies part of the stomach for around sixteen weeks before passing naturally. It requires no surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia.

Because placement takes around twenty minutes and there is no operative recovery, it suits patients wanting a defined, time-limited intervention.

It is generally considered for patients at a BMI where surgery is not yet indicated but dietitian-led management alone has not worked.

As with any weight loss route, the result holds only if nutrition and habits change during the window it provides.

Questions to ask before travelling for treatment

Who will actually perform the procedure, and what are their qualifications and case volume? Where is it performed, and what happens if a complication occurs while I am still there?

What is included in the quoted price — assessment, investigations, the procedure, accommodation, follow-up? What is charged separately?

What follow-up is required, over what period, and who provides it once I return to Singapore? Will you communicate with my doctor there?

How long must I stay, and when is it safe to fly? A clinic that cannot answer these clearly is not one to travel for.

Dr. Rajat Goel and the Singapore connection

Dr. Rajat Goel holds a Fellowship in Minimal Invasive Surgery from Singapore, alongside FMBS from Taiwan and fellowships including FAIS, FICS, FACS, FMAS, FIAGES, FALS and FIMSA.

He is a Gold Medalist with over 25 years in practice, more than 2000 bariatric procedures, 17000 laparoscopic surgeries, over 500 Allurion balloon patients and more than 1300 patients supervised on GLP-1 programmes.

The clinic is in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, and first consultations can be conducted by video for patients outside India.

That video consultation is the sensible first step — it establishes whether treatment is appropriate at all before anyone books a flight.

An honest assessment of medical travel

Medical travel suits some patients and not others. It works best where the treatment is a defined procedure, where cost differences are substantial, and where follow-up can be arranged reliably at home.

It works poorly for ongoing prescriptions requiring monthly adjustment, and for patients whose medical history means complications are more likely.

It is also not the right answer if the same treatment is accessible to you locally at a cost you can manage. Convenience and continuity of care have real value.

We would rather tell a patient that travelling does not make sense for them than take a booking that does not serve them.

Getting a clear answer for your situation

A video consultation covers your weight history, current medications, existing conditions and what you have already tried, and results in a specific recommendation rather than a generic one.

You should leave it knowing whether treatment is appropriate, which route suits you, what it would involve practically, and what it would cost. If the answer is that you should be treated in Singapore, we will say so.

Blood work can usually be arranged locally and reviewed before any travel is planned.

There is no obligation attached to that conversation, and it commits you to nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mounjaro available in Singapore?
Availability and registration status change over time. Confirm the current position with a Singapore-registered doctor or the Health Sciences Authority rather than relying on any article.
Do I need a prescription for weight loss injections in Singapore?
Yes. These are prescription-only medicines regulated by HSA and must be prescribed by a registered doctor after assessment.
Why are weight loss injections expensive in Singapore?
High clinical overheads, strict import and distribution requirements, and a private healthcare market with substantial consultation fees all contribute.
Can I travel to India for weight loss treatment?
For defined procedures such as bariatric surgery or the gastric balloon, yes — many patients do. For ongoing monthly injections, travel suits the treatment poorly.
Does MediSave cover weight loss injections?
Generally not for the medicine in weight management. The position can differ where type 2 diabetes is the primary diagnosis. Check your specific policy.
Can I have a consultation from Singapore first?
Yes. First consultations are available by video, with blood work arranged locally and reviewed before any travel is considered.
