OZEMPIC VS WEGOVY

Same molecule. Different purpose and dose.

Both contain semaglutide, which causes endless confusion. The difference lies in what each is licensed to treat and the doses available. Here is the distinction, clearly.

In short

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide from the same manufacturer. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is licensed for weight management and goes up to a higher dose.

The same active ingredient

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying and improves glucose control. Both products deliver the same molecule.

What differs is the licensed indication and the dose range each product provides.

Ozempic: licensed for type 2 diabetes

Ozempic is approved for glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Weight reduction is a well-documented effect, but it is not the licensed purpose.

It is supplied in lower dose strengths than the weight-management product.

Wegovy: licensed for weight management

Wegovy is approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults meeting BMI criteria, alongside diet and physical activity.

It reaches a higher maximum dose than Ozempic, which is the main reason trials of weight management report larger reductions with it.

Which would a doctor choose?

That depends on your diagnosis, not preference. If you have type 2 diabetes, the treatment decision sits within diabetes care. If your primary concern is obesity without diabetes, a product licensed for weight management is the appropriate route.

Availability in India varies over time, and your doctor will discuss what is currently accessible and suitable for your situation.

What both share

The same mechanism, the same weekly injection format, the same gradual dose ladder, and broadly the same side effect profile — nausea and digestive changes being most common early on.

Both also share the same reality: appetite returns when treatment stops, so nutrition and habit change matter throughout.

Why the dose difference matters

The weight-management product reaches a higher maximum weekly dose than the diabetes product. Because the effect on appetite is dose-dependent, this difference largely explains why weight-management trials report larger reductions.

It also means the dose ladder is longer, with more steps and a longer period before the full effect is reached. Patience during titration is part of the treatment.

Supply and availability in India

Availability of semaglutide products in India has fluctuated with global supply, and what is accessible changes over time. Your doctor will tell you the current position honestly rather than promising a product that cannot be obtained.

This is also why compounded or unlicensed alternatives circulate. These are not quality-assured, dosing cannot be verified, and we do not prescribe or endorse them under any circumstances.

What neither product does

Neither removes the need for adequate protein, resistance exercise or sleep. Neither prevents weight regain after discontinuation without habit change.

Neither is appropriate for cosmetic weight loss in people within a healthy BMI range, and prescribing outside the licensed criteria is not something we do.

Frequently asked questions

Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same drug?
Both contain semaglutide, but they are licensed for different purposes and offer different dose ranges.
Can Ozempic be used for weight loss?
It is licensed for type 2 diabetes. Any use outside that is a clinical decision for your doctor, based on your circumstances.
Which produces more weight loss?
Trials of the higher-dose weight-management product report greater average reduction, largely because of the higher maximum dose.
Are the side effects different?
They are broadly similar, as the active molecule is the same. Higher doses can mean more pronounced early effects.
Which is available in India?
Availability changes. Your doctor will advise on what is currently accessible and clinically appropriate.
